NewManila is a highly conditional move for software engineers. Reddit sentiment is consistent: if you have money—especially remote foreign income—you can live very comfortably, outsource chores, use Grab instead of public transport, eat and socialize cheaply by Western standards, and base yourself in BGC, Makati, or Salcedo where life feels clean, convenient, and expat-friendly. Many residents genuinely love the friendliness, English accessibility, nightlife, family/community culture, and the feeling that the Philippines becomes home.
For a software engineer relying on the local job market, the picture is much less attractive. Manila ranks poorly for tech purchasing power and net income compared with other tech cities, and commenters warn that junior pay is nowhere near US or other developed-market levels. Experienced developers can do much better, but outcomes vary wildly by company, skill, foreign-client exposure, night-shift willingness, and whether a role is remote, hybrid, or onsite.
The biggest practical warning is that Manila’s problems are not subtle: traffic, weak public transport, poor sidewalks and roads, pollution, heat/rain, and safety concerns affect daily life. BGC can insulate you from many of these issues, but some residents describe it as a comfortable bubble with less “real Philippines” character. Overall, Manila is compelling for remote earners and people with personal ties to the country, but it is a mediocre pure career move for most software engineers on local compensation.

Manila is socially easy but administratively and professionally mixed for foreign software engineers. English is common at work and in daily life, the expat community is large, and locals are generally described as friendly and open, so cultural onboarding is easier than in many Asian cities.
The harder part is the legal/work setup and economics. A local job usually requires an employer-sponsored work visa and paperwork, while many expats prefer staying through tourist extensions, family/spouse routes, retirement/residency options, or remote-work arrangements where legally appropriate. A dedicated digital-nomad-style path has been discussed, but practical availability and rules can change, so it should not be assumed without checking current immigration guidance.
Day to day, relocation is easiest if you can choose housing near your office or live in a self-contained area like BGC/Makati. Without that, traffic, unreliable public transport, pollution, and bureaucracy make the move feel much harder.
Best for software engineers with remote foreign income, senior-level leverage, or a strong reason to be in the Philippines who can live near work in BGC, Makati, Salcedo, or similar areas. Avoid it if you are early-career, dependent on local pay, sensitive to pollution/traffic, or expecting efficient urban infrastructure.
